Experiments in Movement Preservation
If there were only one physical movement we could preserve and pass on forever—what would it be, and why that one above all others?
And how does one even preserve movement or dance? What practices and technologies are available to us for this purpose, and is it possible to invent new ones?
These questions are the point of departure for a series of works and artistic actions created as part of a research journey by dance, theatre, and media artists within The Ark project, presented here in a rotating exhibition.
The project was born within a reality in which artistic languages are being forgotten and eroded, cultural institutions are falling silent, and governmental support for the performing arts—both contemporary and traditional—is steadily dwindling. Recognizing this reality, and realizing that dance faces constant threat of extinction as time goes by, we built an Ark—a capsule for the preservation of movement. To understand this task, one must first distinguish between movement and dance.
Movement is the raw, everyday action: small gestures, patterns of behavior, ways of moving through the world that carry history, family memory, and entire cultures. Dance, by contrast, is the artistic language that emerges from these movements—the organizing gaze,
the aesthetic interpretation, the choreography. In this exhibition, we seek to preserve and safeguard both movement and dance, and to trace the connections between them.
The complexity of preserving dance stems in part from its nature as an ephemeral art, existing only in the here and now. The moment a dancer completes a movement, it disappears, leaving no physical trace. The attempt to preserve it is always at odds with the danger of freezing it: video documentation or photography do not necessarily capture the full dynamism and space in which movement lives.
To address this challenge, we had to develop new practices of bodily transmission. We collected records of movement, dismantled them, and searched for new ways to convert and translate them.
The works on view are live creations that are simultaneously digitally recorded and preserved in a temporary archive. The Ark we present here is an attempt to transform that archive into a space accessible to all, one capable of carrying its cultural legacy forward to future generations. We invite you to engage in an experience that is not only visual—to allow your body to become part of the movement space, in resonance and remembrance.
